The easiest way to remember UVA & UVB is ‘A’ stands for aging and ‘B’ stands for burning. To recall back, UVA ray penetrate deeper into skin giving rise to ’progressive’ injuries such as face wrinkles and fine lines, unlike the ‘immediate’ injuries from UVB.

Actually, there is a rating system for the UVA, called the PA rating, but it is not currently recognized by the U.S. FDA. The amount of UVA that reaches earth is actually significant, amounting to >90% and
"Go for the Mexoryl SX, a sunblock produced by L’Oreal and it is reported to be an excellent product and it can block both UVA and UVB and its UVA protection can sustain longer than most other products"
it is capable of penetrating through windows and cloud. This PA system is very common for anti sunscreen / sunblock and not limiting to anti wrinkle cream in Asian countries, particularly in Japan. There are 4 levels of protection: PA, PA+, PA++,PA+++ for the rating system. The more the plus (+) sign, the greater the level of protection and PA++ is the minimum recommended rating.
There are many forms of sunblocks or sunscreens in the market and you can find them in waxes, sprays, or powders apart from the more common lotions/gels. There are cases whereby some people are allergic to the Oxybenzone and PABA and if this happens, try converting to other brands. Which is the most suitable type of sunscreen / sunblock to your skin? Well, it varies very much on individual, as long as it is comfortable and not being too sticky, then it is okay.

Unfortunately, a few years ago when I checked, the Mexoryl SX is still not available in US soil but already available mostly in the rest of the world. Perhaps you can it now in US.

Info - I have seen some sunscren with SPF rating as high as 130, but you should only opt for minimum of SPF30 as described in Part 2 of this article as anything higher is just inconsequential.

Higher SPF The Better? – Pt 3

The SPFs are not the same everywhere and vary from one country to another. If you are from Europe, the SPF is governed by the DIN 67502 standard and DIN is the German Institute for Standardization. The American SPF tends to be higher than the DIN for the same degree of protection and if you are an avid globetrotter, it is good to take note.

For an instance, SPF 12 is equal to DIN 9 and SPF 19 is equal to DIN 15 due to different system used by different countries and should not be too much of a concern. The purpose of sunscreen is to avoid SUN TANNING and SUNBURN and also preventing the rash PHOTOSENSITIVITY in certain patients.

Although the sunlight is the major source for vitamin D, which is important for the absorption of calcium for healthy bones and muscle strength for our body, over exposure is destructive especially to the in fairer skin people. Avobenzone ( also called Parsol 1789 ), para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and benzophenone are the most commonly found UV absorbing elements in most sunscreens. This is what happens. When these elements get hit by the UV, they will then initiate and neutralize the reaction. Sunscreen works in similar to ‘absorbing shield’. Sunblocks mostly contain the UV reflective ZNO ( Zinc Oxide ) and TiO2 ( Titanium Dioxide ). They will reflect / disperse the UV in the same manner a mirror would do. Sunblock works in similar to ‘reflective shield’ Best sunscreens come from the broad spectrum sunscreens having at least 3 active ingredients such as the TiO2, PABA derivatives, ZNO, Parsol 1789. or Oxybenzone

Some of the antioxidants are from the Vitamin C, beta-carotene and green tea extract, and they will support for anti wrinkle and skin damages.

Info - Greater than 1 million people in US are diagnosed with cancer on skin each year making it the most common cancer in the country and it can be largely prevented by the sun protection program

The terms Sunblock, Sunscreen, Sun Tan Lotion and Sun Cream are often used interchangeably and as being part of the face wrinkles removal program, readers should be awared that they do in fact, draw some dissimilarities. Identifying and knowing which product to use such as the anti wrinkle cream with SPF is crucial as wrinkles removal isn't a quick fix solution but rather a continuous with middle to long goal.

As majority of the sunscreens in the market are unlikely to filter UVA radiation, therefore, many of those using the sunscreens can be exposed to UVA without realizing it. Switching to sunscreen of broad-spectrum ( UVA/UVB ) type can solve this problem.

The debate over the issue on safe SPF rating is on-going and never seem to end as different parties have their own different opinions. However, many experts tend to come to common understanding that SPF 15 is the minimum to prevent damages from face wrinkling, burning and sun tanning. Over exposure to UV ray is the single most damaging occurrence to human skin. The U.S. FDA, on the other hand, doesn’t favor SPF up to 50, asserting this might stir up public insights that anything short of SPF50 will be unsafe. A SPF50 signifies a person can withhold 50X amount of normal sun to burn, which is overly exaggerated as the SPF50 sunscreen will still allow some amount of UVB ray to penetrate through. Meaning it doesn’t totally assure risk-free from cancer, face wrinkling and other detrimental factors if stand under the sun, according to the dermatologists. In addition, the effectiveness tends to weaken when the SPF number increases, meaning the protection is more effective from the lower band of SPF10 to SPF30 ( difference of 20 ) than from the higher band of SPF 30 to 50 ( difference of 20 ).

UV light pictureHowever, from some physicians and producers point of views, they tend to believe that sunscreen with higher SPF ratings should be made accessible for more options to consumer. SPF of 30 in reality, is sufficient enough to protect from sunburn.

Info - Sunscreen should be re-applied more regularly during activities like swimming or other water activities and also that sweat heavily as they can remove the sunscreen away

Is higher SPF the better? Our sheer understanding for the SPF is that, the higher the value, the better it gets for sun protection. SPF is actually short acronym for Sun Protective Factor, an evaluation
"A SPF of 30 means a person using the products can withstand up to 30X longer under the sunlight without sunburn"
standard for measuring the effectiveness on sun products against sun ray as stipulated by product manufacturers. In reality, higher SPF doesn’t mean better protection from sun UV. Firstly, let us get acquaint with the basic facts without being distracted. A SPF of 30 means a person using the products can withstand up to 30X longer under the sunlight without sunburn. However, almost all the SPF ratings are only meant for UVB rays only. The sunlight consists of UVA, UVB and UVC and generally all of them can harm your skin causing wrinkles and fine lines. One way of another or in later part of life, the UVA and UVB from the sunlight will harm your skin causing complications such as wrinkles and fine lines. The sunlight consists of UVA, UVB and UVC.

Info - It makes sense why most SPF rating only for UVB ray. Since UVB ray can cause ‘immediate‘ damages, the degree of sunburn is easier to be quantified and ‘seen’ for effectiveness. For the insidious UVA, it is different, the detrimental paths are hard to see and ‘measured’ immediately since the effects are ‘progressive ‘ over time.
